Post Office Protocol (POP)

A protocol designed to allow single users to read mail from a server. There are three versions: POP, POP2, and POP3. When email is sent to you, it is stored on the server until accessed by you. Once you are authenticated, the POP is used to transmit the stored mail from the server to your local mailbox on your client machine.

Hypertext Markup Language (HTML)

The standard way to mark text documents for publishing on the World Wide Web. HTML is marked-up using tags surrounded by brackets. To see what tagged HTML text looks like, select the View Source feature from the menus in the program you are using to view this document now, and you'll see a display of the HTML text used to create this page.

Electronic Mail (Email)

A method by which computer users can exchange messages with each other over a network. Email is probably the most widely-used communications tool on the Internet. There are many quirky conventions to Email, but most entail a To:, From:, and Subject: line. One of email's advantages is its ability to be forwarded and replied to easily.

Email Address

Your email address is made up of several parts. By convention, addresses use lowercase letters with no spaces. The first part of the address, the username, identifies a unique user on a server.

Remote Black Lists (RBL)

RBL is a tool used to block Spam mails from entering your mail server and the unidentified UCE that are delivered to the users’ mailboxes. Some organizations provide the RBL (Remote Black Lists) for the mail server to stop the Spam.

Email BCC

Check the On box and enter the desired mail account in the To field to receive copies of all mails being sent or received by the Server.  The specified mail account can be either a local mail account or an external mail account hosted by your local ISP, for example, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Email White List

White List to create the White List.  If you choose a stricter restriction on the Spam scheme, it is possible that you may filter out useful emails.  To avoid misjudgment, you can enter the accepted email source one by one or import a white list.

Spam Filter

The Spam scheme adopted by the filter uses three filter layers to detect Spam. The first protection layer uses the backlist service provided by three famous Spam websites: spamcop.net, ordb.org, spamhaus.org, to reject Spam delivered from the IP addresses recorded under the blacklist.

Virus Filter-ClamAV™

An anti-virus freeware “Clam AntiVirus” is built-in to filter emails on mail gateways.  It contains a flexible and scalable multi-threaded daemon and an advanced tool for automatic database updating via Internet.  Please go to www.clamav.net for more information.

Printer Server

Printer Server to configure a shared printer resource for all LAN users.

Click On to enable the Printer Server, and select the port to connect to the printer server: LPT Port or USB Port.
Before you configure printer service settings, connect your printer to either the parallel port or the USB port of the Server, and configure the printer settings in your PC.

VPN Server(Virtual Private Network) service

For network security reasons, the administrator can set up a VPN (virtual private network) between users and the Server by PPTP (Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol). Users must use a separate Internet connection to remote access the virtual private network.

VPN (virtual private network) is a private and secure network built on the public internet by using the authentication and encryption. Currently, the VPN server can use only PPTP connection to access the Server. If you can not set up the PPTP connection via your ISP, check your computer configurations. The connection failure might be caused by the firewall configuration problems.

Host Alias (Virtual Host)

Virtual Host means to maintain two or more servers on your server, and this will allow multiple WebPages hosting and subdomain WebPages hosting.

The Server is restricted to configure a maximum of 100 sets of Master DNS and Slave DNS settings. The Host Alias (Virtual Host) has to be configured in accordance with DNS Server configurations, so that Host Alias can function effectively.

Host Alias (Virtual Host) to enter the Host Alias administrator page.  You can assign web pages to respective web page administrators, and save the web pages under the web administrator’s public_html directory.

Host

A computer that is attached to a network or the Internet. Hosts allow users on client machines to connect and share files or transfer information. Individual users communicate with hosts by using client application programs.

SAMBA Server

SAMBA Server to enable the network neighborhood and resources-sharing functions for all client PCs on LAN.

Enter Computer Name and Workgroup names for the Server and click OK.  The domain name of System Properties in PCs and the Workgroup name you specify in the Server must be the same before the network neighborhood function can be used.

Mail Server

You can build up your mail server using dynamic IP from your ISP.  Enter the mail server address of your upstream ISP in the field of Upstream Mail Server.  The specified mail server needs to be equipped with the mail relay feature before you can configure Upstream Mail Server Setup.

Check with the ISP if they provide the mail relay feature. For instance, if you are using the HiNet ADSL connection service which is equipped with the mail relay feature, enter msa.hinet.net, and click OK to send/receive emails from the ISP.

Anonymous FTP

By using the word "anonymous" as your user ID and your email address as the password when you login to an FTP site, you can bypass local security checks and gain limited access to public files on the remote computer. This type of access is available on most FTP sites, but not all.

File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

The most widely-used way of downloading and uploading (getting and putting) files across an Internet connection. The File Transfer Protocol is a standardized way to connect computers so that files can be shared between them easily.

There is a set of commands in FTP for making and changing directories, transferring, copying, moving, and deleting files. Formerly, all FTP connections were text based, but graphical applications are now available that make FTP commands as easy as dragging and dropping. Numerous FTP clients exist for a number of platforms.

MySQL Server

When you need to configure the MySQL Server for installing the database management system named blog, enter the name blog in Database Management. Next, upload the blog system via FTP server to the web page public_html assigned to the Homepage account.

Click Install phpMyAdmin or Uninstall phpMyAdmin to add or remove the original database management interface. The system is built in with a MySQL Server and users can upload php programs to access database. Go to http://www.php.net/manual/tw/ref.mysql.php for detailed information of PHP MySQL language.

Network File System (NFS)

A protocol developed by Sun Microsystems. NFS allows a computer to access and use files over a network as if they were local. This protocol has been incorporated into the products of more two-hundred companies, and is now a de facto Internet standard.

Bandwidth Management

Bandwidth

This refers to the difference (measured in Hz), between the highest and lowest frequencies of a transmission. Most people loosely refer to bandwidth as the amount of data that can be transferred over a network connection.

Before you are able to use the Bandwidth Management function, enter the appropriate bandwidth rate in Download Bandwidth and Upload Bandwidth fields. For example, if the ADSL bandwidth rates you have applied are 2M/256 Kbps, enter 2048 Kbps in the Download Bandwidth field, and 256 Kbps in the Upload Bandwidth field. Click On or Off button to enable or disable the function.

Click Auto Settings button   on the bottom of the screen, and the Server will allocate bandwidth for each service.  If you enter Download Bandwidth and Upload Bandwidth in accordance with the Internet transmission rate, the Server will allocate the rest of the bandwidth among the services.  You can also manually allocate the bandwidth to meet your network demand. Enter a number in the service field that you want to change the transmission rate, and click   Manual Settings.

Note that if you enter inaccurate transmission rates, it might affect the system performance of the Server.  Please consult your local ISP to obtain the correct download and upload rates of your Internet link for you to enter the bandwidth properly.

Remote Backup Settings:

The remote backup can help to simplify the administrator’s workload. The available functions include Automatic Backup and Manual Backup.

• • • • Automatic Backup: You can specify an automatic backup at a specified time.  According to the Backup Time you enter in Remote Backup Settings External Backup, the Server will perform backups at the specified time on a daily basis and save the backup file to the path you specified in the Directory or Share Name field.
  • • • Manual Backup: Click Backup Now to perform the manual backup. In addition to the Automatic Backup assigned, the administrator can also do the backup manually at any time.

MAC Filter

MAC Filter to enter MAC addresses that you want to block and click Add to confirm.  Please refer to Appendix A for how to check for the MAC address on the network interface card for each PC.

After the MAC address is entered, the PC specified will be restricted to use only the internal service and mail functions provided by the Server.

For example, after you enter the MAC address belonging to employee Steven, he is permitted to use only the internal connection services, including network neighborhood, printer server, FTP server, and internal emails sending/receiving via Web Mail. However, Steven will not be able to send/ receive external mails and visit other websites except the company’s website. All the external Internet services will not be available for Steven.

Port Filter

Port Filter to block the selected service ports as required for all local PCs, so that employees are not allowed to go online downloading files or sending e-mails, for example.  Enter a port number, click Add and OK to confirm.  You can also select the common ports from the list and click Add to add the selected port into the block list.  For instance, to restrict a local PC downloading files via FTP server, add port 20:21.

Website Filter

Website Filter to restrict users to access specified websites.  Enter IP addresses or domain names that you want to block and click Add and OK to confirm.  For example, to restrict employee chatting online with their friends via MSN, enter www.msn.com.

Software Filter

Internet Surfing Restrictions > Software Filter to restrict users using the IM (Instant Messaging) software, such as MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, ICQ, etc. via local PCs, so that the company confidentiality can be secured, and the work efficiency can be maintained consequently. After the function is enabled, LAN users are not allowed to use the blocked software.

Virtual Server and DMZ

In the computer network, the purpose of a DMZ is to add an additional layer of security to an organization's Local Area Network (LAN) to prevent the external attacker from direct access to the Server containing the company’s sensitive information. The users on the Internet are only allowed to access the device in the DMZ, rather than the whole network. In the general DMZ, the corporate websites allow the external users to search and use the corporate resources, but the internal confidential information is not publicly accessible. Therefore, even if any hacker attacks the DMZ and the company’s website, the important information of the company will still be protected, and will not be exposed.

Firewall

Firewall to configure Firewall and set restrictions on the user access.  Only the allowed users can establish network connections to the Server. You can use Firewall to protect the host machine from the risk of attacks from the outside intruders as well as allow specific Internet access. The Server uses the strict deny-everything policy. You have to configure before any user access can be allowed.

DNS Server

DNS Server to assign two or more domain names, set up web pages, and provide sub-networks using one identical IP address.

You can assign up to 10 domain names to one single IP address. The number of domain names that can be assigned to one IP address under sub-networks is unlimited. No matter you configure the Master DNS or Slave DNS for DNS server, you have to also configure the Host Alias (Virtual Host).

Domain Name System (DNS)

The DNS is a static, hierarchical name service used with TCP/IP hosts, and is housed on a number of servers on the Internet. Basically, it maintains a database for figuring out and finding (or resolving) host names and IP addresses on the Internet. This allows users to specify remote computers by host names rather than numerical IP addresses (if you've used UNIX, you may have heard the DNS referred to as the BSD UNIX BIND service). For example, go to a DOS prompt in Windows 95, the % prompt in UNIX, or use a ping client for Windows 3.1 or Mac, and type ping www.winfiles.com. This will check the DNS server you have configured, look up the numerical IP address for www.winfiles.com, and then ping that server's IP address. The advantage of the DNS is that you don't have to remember numerical IP addresses for all the Internet sites you want to access.

Domain

A "logical" region of the Internet. People sometimes refer to them loosely as "sites." Generally, a domain corresponds to an IP address or an area on a host.

Domain Name Settings

Domain Name Settings allow you to assign a domain name for the Server.  You may enter a static domain name specific to your network use, or use the dynamic domain name service provided by your local ISP.
Static Domain Name: Select Static Domain Name and enter the domain name that you have applied successfully.
Dynamic Domain Name: Select the service provider of your dynamic domain name and enter the domain name and related account information.

PlusNet Dynamic DNS system

PlusNet Dynamic DNS system provided by the Server is specially designed for the users of the Server.  All domain names and passwords applied from PlusNet Dynamic DNS system can only be used on this Server since they cannot be used on other systems or PCs. Please refer to Appendix B on the steps to apply for the domain names and passwords from PlusNet Dynamic DNS system.

Gateway

A kind of "go-between" device or program that passes information between networks that normally couldn't communicate. What used to be called a gateway is now called a router. Not to be confused with a protocol converter.

Address Mask

The address mask is used to identify the parts of an IP address that correspond to the different sections (separated by dots). It's also known as the "subnet mask" since the network portion of an address can be determined by the encoding inherent in an IP address.

Internet Protocol Address (IP Address)

The 32-bit address defined by the Internet Protocol. Every resource on the Internet has a unique numerical IP address, represented in dotted decimal notation. IP addresses are the closest thing the Internet has to phone numbers. When you "call" that number (using any number of connection methods such as FTP, HTTP, Gopher, etc.) you get connected to the computer to which that IP address is assigned.

LAN(Local Area Network)

Acronym for Local Area Network. LANs are now commonplace in most businesses, allowing users to send email and share resources such as files, printers, modems, etc. Currently, most larger companies are connection their LANs to the Internet, allowing users to connect to resources within or outside the LAN.

Ethernet

A standard and probably the most popular connection type for Local Area Networks (LANs). It was first developed by Xerox, and later refined by Digital, Intel and Xerox. In an Ethernet configuration, computers are connected by coaxial or twisted-pair cable where they contend for network access using a Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection (CSMA/CD) paradigm. Ethernet can transfer information at up to 10 Megabit-per-second (Mb/s).

Internet Service Provider (ISP)

An ISP is a company that maintains a network that is linked to the Internet via a dedicated communication line, usually a high-speed link known as a T1. An ISP offers use of its dedicated communication lines to companies or individuals (like me) who can't afford $1,300 a month for a direct connection. Using a modem, you can dial up to a service provider whose computers will connect you to the Internet, typically for a fee.

Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

TCP/IP is the standard communications protocol required for Internet computers. To communicate using TCP/IP, PCs need a set of software components called a TCP/IP stack. Macintoshes typically use a proprietary software package called MacTCP. Most UNIX systems are built with TCP/IP capabilities.

Alias

A type of nickname (usually short and easy to remember) that refers to a type of network resource. Aliases are used so you won't have to remember the long and difficult names typical of network resources.

Allow Administrator from WAN:

Check the box to allow access to the administrator interface of the Server by a remote PC via web browser.  You can only configure your server from the local network if you choose to leave the box blank. The option is defaulted as enabled.
